At Black Mountain Primary School (BMP), the sense of belonging runs deep, and at the heart of that community is Principal Kelly Owen. A proud graduate of Charles D. Owen High School, Ms. Owen takes pride in leading and serving in the same community where she was raised and where she’s now raising her two daughters.

With 26 years in education, including 19 in administration, Ms. Owen’s experience and leadership have shaped countless students, teachers, and families. This school year marks her fourth year at BMP, and she continues to pour her passion into ensuring that every child feels seen, supported, and inspired.
“I love being a principal because I get to be part of something truly special every day,” she explained. “There’s nothing like seeing a child’s face light up when they accomplish something new or watching a teacher’s confidence grow as they try new ideas. I get to celebrate small victories, encourage big dreams, and help create a school where everyone feels cared for and supported. This job lets me combine my love for people, learning, and leadership - and there’s no better feeling than knowing I’m helping make a difference in the lives of children and the community I serve.”

Her impact is felt by everyone who walks through the doors of BMP, from the youngest learners to the dedicated staff who guide them each day.
Third grader Aspen shared, “I love Ms. Owen, and I want to keep her as my principal forever!”

First grade teacher Lisa King echoed that sentiment.
“Kelly is a wonderful Principal who deeply cares for the safety, wellbeing and growth of not only our students and families, but all of our staff at BMP,” she said. “She leads with compassion, excellence and a community-first mindset, which makes our school cohesive and welcoming to parents, students and staff alike. I feel honored and blessed to work for a principal who cares so much for her school family.”
It’s clear that Kelly Owen’s leadership goes beyond her title - she’s a hometown hero who continues to lead the climb in her school and community.
We are so thankful for all 45 principals across Buncombe County Schools, and their dedication to students, staff, families, and communities. Thank you to each and every one of our amazing administrators during National Principal Month.
