Clif Dodson

Mr. Dodson is the director of Bands at Cane Creek Middle School where he has taught instrumental music education since 2002. In his 23rd year of teaching, he is privileged to work with some of the finest students in the state of North Carolina both past and present.


During his career, he has served as a clinician, adjudicator, and performer. He has been honored to conduct the WNCBA All-District concert band and has had the honor of conducting band clinics throughout North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee. He has adjudicated for the North Carolina Bandmasters concert band music performance adjudication as well other concert band festivals.  


He received his Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Appalachian State University, his Masters of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Louisville, and in 2002 became certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/Music. This certification was renewed in 2011.

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina he was strongly influenced by the rich musical culture of the Moravian Church. Mr. Dodson began his musical training at age 6 on piano and has been involved in many musical venues ever since.


He has studied saxophone performance with Todd Wright and William A. Gora of Appalachian State University and Bassoon Performance with Rebecca Jemian of Ithaca Conservatory and Roger Sorenson, formerly of the Louisville Orchestra. He has taught in both the North Carolina and Kentucky public schools. His bands have consistently received superior ratings in both the Kentucky and North Carolina state band and orchestra Music Performance Adjudications and have taken top honors in various national band festivals. The Cane Creek Middle School Honors Symphonic band is a 5 time "Golden Mickey" champion of Festival Disney in Orlando, has performed on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and the World War II monument in Washington DC, as well as the NCMEA Conference in Winston-Salem in 2016. This Spring they will perform in Stanley Hall at the Field Museum in Chicago. 


Cane Creek middle school bands include 5 concert band classes and as staffing and interests allow, a pit orchestra for the performing arts musical, jazz band, and pep band. Cane Creek Middle School band students feed into the TC Roberson and AC Reynolds high school programs.


Mr. Dodson lives in Asheville with his wife Leigh Dodson, and sons Timothy, Wesley, and Bradley. As an Eagle Scout, he is involved in scouting with his three sons and has hiked many miles of the Appalachian Trail. His professional memberships have included ASBDA, NAfME, NCMEA, NBA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. He performs on a variety of instruments in church as well as local venues in the Asheville area as time permits. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Mr. Dodson enjoys rock climbing, snow and water skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping. He is the swim coach and ski club coach for Cane Creek Middle School.
