Remote Learning / Welcome Back!

This page will be updated as time goes on. Please check for updates.

WELCOME BACK! I hope everyone is doing well and can't wait to see the students again!!!

Band this year will be remote like all other classes for the next 6 weeks. We will be playing our instruments at home and utilizing several LMS's (learning management systems) to engage our students.
All students will be required to log into a zoom class for a synchronous learning session at a specific time in their daily schedule each day.

Things to note this year:

1. Do not bring your instrument to school the first week. We will not be using instruments that week.

2. Beginners in 6th grade may stop by the music store to pick up instruments beginning next week. They will begin playing during the first remote week. They will also need the essential elements instructional book for the instrument they play. You can get this at the Music and Arts store (299-3000) or amazon.

3. For all CCMS band students there will not be a practice report to turn in this year. Practice time will be graded by time spent on the various LMS's like smartmusic etc.

4. For 7th & 8th grade there is no band karate this year. I may or may not invent a substitute for this experience.

5. It is not possible to  play together online with the various lag in the many internet connections.

Daily Lessons:
1. Each student will begin each daily lesson by logging into google classroom for band and checking the class stream for the zoom link to click on.

2. Daily attendance will be recorded.

3. Following the synchronous zoom meeting students will have a follow up activity to complete using various LMS's.

4. Though we are only having one elective per week I will be assigning things to work on  during their week off. Our band will not be very good if they lay down their instruments every other week. Everyone knows the best way to learn an instrument is to practice a bit each day!  I will rely on parents to discern if your child is capable of doing practice on their week off. It will not be graded.

5. It will be my goal to make lessons fun and engaging and to keep it light.

We are hurricane strong and together we will weather this storm! CCMS bands will grow during this time and we will continue to try to be the best instrumentalists/ musicians we can be.

Parent support of your young instrumentalist is paramount. Please be sure: they have a working instrument, a space to practice where they are not driving others in the house crazy, and that they have the book and all of the necessary supplies to keep their instrument in top shape.  Parents please be sure you have filled out the Band Contract for the year!

Please contact me at cw.dodson@bcsemail.org if you have any questions!

The items below are resources to help students with online assignments this year:

Problems with Smartmusic?

1. Restart the browser window
2. If that doesn't work restart the computer
3. If it says you have mic problems, be sure the volume is all the way up .... hit try again many times if necessary
4. If that doesn't work, email me
5. If that doesn't work call their customer service(866) 240-4041

***NOTE****Smartmusic is a web application... it works through any browser on any device connected to the internet... If your school computer stops working move on to another
device in the house and contact the help desk...

*****ALSO NOTE*******REMINDER:::
I am asking students to try and get an 85 or higher smartmusic assignments. If you cannot get an 85 or higher and you have tried your best / given it a reasonable amount of time --go ahead and submit- I will not take points off--

Some assignments are definitely more frustrating than others- and I can click on any assignment you submit and listen to you play when I have concerns about low scores.

Also -some students are perfectionist and they don't want to submit a low score but if you have reached the point of tears....you have gone waaayyyy past the point where you should have just turned it in-

No submit button after recording? \
Go to the home screen (little house icon beside the word smartmusic)
Find the assignment on the home screen and click the word "start"
If you do not start the assignment this way you will not be able to "submit" after recording-

Sample Student learning day for remote instrumental education:
Assemble/ prepare your instrument and practice area to be free of distractions.
Open email check for announcements/ information from all teachers.
Open G classroom and get the zoom link for the day.

Here are practice tips:

1. Get into a routine! You will feel better about life in general when you have a good daily routine. Be sure musical practice is a part of it.
2. Be positive! - a little encouragement from parents goes a long way. (never use practice time as discipline)
3. Have a dedicated spot where you can practice without annoying others in the house. -- Parents banish them to the outer edges of the yard or some dark corner of the basement where they won't want to be anyway.
4. Students play for your parents-- give mini recitals at home! Ask your child to play songs for the family and guests from time to time. Even facetime grandparents and play for them!
5. If you don't practice it will produce anxiety because you are behind or you feel like you can't keep up with the class.
6. Make it fun!If you hate practicing you are doing it wrong. There are so many resources for you on you tube, the internet etc....so many ways to have a good time.
7. Good routines for 30 minute practice time:
