Buncombe County Schools has named Ms. Kimberly Mason as the new principal of Cane Creek Middle School, effective July 1.

Ms. Mason, currently an assistant principal at North Buncombe High School, has previously served as a tutor, physical education teacher and coach at Cane Creek. Ms. Mason holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Mars Hill University and a master’s degree in school administration from Western Carolina University. An educator for 20 years, Ms. Mason is dedicated to providing all students with a safe environment and well-rounded education that prepares them for their tomorrow.

“I look forward to returning to the Cane Creek community where I can serve the students, staff, and families to the best of my ability,” she said. “This is where I began my career in Buncombe County, and it feels like I am coming home.”

Outgoing Cane Creek Middle School Principal Bonnie Johnston is retiring after 37 years as an educator.

“I am proud of teaching and leading with my heart,” she said. “I brought passion and determination to every role I was given and genuinely cared for those I worked with. I will miss my staff and students and the enriching interactions I had with them daily. The transition to remote learning this spring gave me an early window into how it will feel to be without the face-to-face interactions that have motivated me and brought me joy throughout my career. Schools are a magical place to be, and I will miss every aspect of being an educator.”

"I am excited for Ms. Mason to return home to CCMS," said BCS Associate Superintendent Susanne Swanger. "She has excellent curriculum knowledge and thoroughly enjoys working with staff, students, and families. Ms. Mason will be a great leader at CCMS."

Congratulations to Ms. Mason as she begins her new leadership role and Ms. Johnston as she enjoys her well-earned retirement.
