Cane Creek Middle School General Athletic Information

Dear Parents,

Cane Creek Middle School has in our brief history achieved excellence in Academics, Arts, and Athletics. We currently have over 50 championship banners from the French Broad Middle School Conference hanging in our gym. We look forward to future success as our students continue the ""Cane Creek Way" of excellence and sportsmanship in all that we do.

Sincerely,

Bob Washel, Athletic Director

Athlete Expectations

All student-athletes represent Buncombe County, their respective schools and their families. Therefore, each student athlete's actions both in and out of school must reflect positively on the district and school community or the participant will not represent the school in any of our athletic activities.

While at school, student-athletes are expected to set positive examples for the rest of the student body. All student-athletes are expected to follow school rules at all times.

Eligibility Requirements

The purpose of all eligibility rules and regulations is to keep competition equitable and to maintain athletics in proper perspective in relation to the total educational program. The following regulations are considered as minimum standards for each local administrative unit to follow in maintaining the highest possible standards relative to its interscholastic athletic program.

1Age: A student may not participate on a 7th or 8th grade team if he or she turns 15 years old on or before August 31st of the current school year.

2. Attendance: A student must be in attendance at least 85% (77 of 90 days) of the previous semester.

3. Residence: A student must participate at the school to which he or she is assigned by the local board of education. No student may participate in the FBMSC if they are attending a private school or charter school..

4. Academic GuidelineUpon entering 7th grade, students will be eligible until the end of the first 9 week grading period. To remain eligible, the student must pass 5 out of classes. Thus, a student who fails 2 or more classes on a 9 - weeks report card will be deemed academically ineligible during the next 9 - week grading period. NOTE: If you are ineligible at the beginning of a sports season, you will remain ineligible for that entire season. Additional information about academic eligibility can be found in the Parent - Student Athletic Handbook.

5. Participation of Eligibility: From the student's date of entry into the 7th grade, he/she will have four consecutive semesters of eligibility, regardless of medical hardship.

6. Transfers: A student transfer by the Board of Education from one district to another (Schedule C) is not eligible until the next semester.

7. Behavior: A student dismissed from a team for behavior is ineligible for participation for the remainder of that season and depending on the severity of the behavior, the suspension from athletics could be for the rest of the school year. Additional information about behavior eligibility can be found in the Parent - Student Athletic Handbook.

Medical Examination Rule

In order to be eligible for practice or participation in interscholastic athletic contests, a player must receive a medical examination once every three hundred sixty-five days by a physician licensed to practice medicine. A copy of this physical exam is to be given to the coach and will be kept on file by the coach or athletic director.

Fees

A mandatory one-time yearly fee of $40 is required by each athlete. This fee includes the following: A BCS transportation fee of $35.00 and a SUPPLEMENTAL insurance fee of $5.00.

Tryouts

Coaches will conduct tryouts in each sport at the beginning of each season. Students who tryout and do not make an athletic team are encouraged to participate in outside sports activities to continue to develop athletic skills.

Dual Sport Participation

Two School Teams in the Same Season

Athletes may be permitted dual participation on two school teams in the same season provided the athlete and coaches involved can resolve all conflicts in advance regarding expectations, practices, and participation in games or contests. The Athletic Director, the Athletic Administrator, and both coaches must meet and approve the dual participation of an athlete.

School and Non-School Participation

Dual Participation on a non-school team is allowed as long as the athlete commits to his or her middle school team as their primary commitment. No school practice, contest, game or team function can be missed for non-school participation without advance approval of the school coach and the Athletic Director. All non-school athletic participation during the school year is secondary to participation in Cane Creek Middle School Athletics and is not to be encouraged or discouraged by the Cane Creek Middle School Coaching Staff. Any athlete who, without prior approval, misses a school athletic practice, contest, game, or function to participate in a non-school athletic event will be placed on probation for a two to six week period from the sport. A second occurrence would result in a calendar year suspension from all athletic participation. The Athletic Director, Athletic Administrator, and School Principal will make the final decision on the length of the suspension.

NOTE: MORE DETAILED INFORMATION REGARDING ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION CAN BE FOUND IN THE PARENT - STUDENT ATHLETIC HANDBOOK.
